James "SowersUNCC" Sowers, or Mike Sowers as he prefers to be called, took down the $5k event at the Borgata Winter Poker Open today for just under $400k, overcoming a tough final table that included the likes of Tom "Durrrr" Dwan and Erick Lindgren.
The key hand of the final table came during three-handed play when Michael "Willie" Wax, Tom Dwan and Sowers got their chips in the middle on a flop of 9 4 5. Wax held a pair of tens and pushed all-in, Dwan called with a pair of Jacks, Sowers went over the top holding two pair (9's and 4's) and Dwan called the all-in again. Sower's two pair held up, Wax was eliminated and Dwan went from chipleader to shortstack in one hand.
Sowers had a massive chiplead and it wasn't long before the tournament was over. Sowers pushed with 6-3 and Dwan called holding A-6. A three came on the flop and the tournament was over.
Sowers is another extremely strong online player whose success online has now carried over to the "live" poker format. I would expect more great things from Mike Sowers in the future, both online and live.
Tom Dwan continued his strong play as of late, placing second in this tournament after finishing second in a $3k Pot Limit Omaha tournament at the Aussie Millions and finishing 4th at the 2007 World Poker Finals in November for $324k. Dwan has over $660k in live cashes since November.
Erick Lindgren finished 5th in the event for $80k.
The main event of the Borgata Winter Open begins on Sunday and will conclude on January 31st.
