Dustin "Neverwin" Woolf took down the 2008 Pokerstars World Championship of Battleship Poker, defeating Vanessa "suckoutqueen" Selbst in the finals of the event. For his victory, Woolf earned $48k and a gold bracelet; Selbst earned just over $25k for her second place finish.
"Neverwin" is on a hot streak as of late, taking down this event and recently finishing third in a "Super Tuesday" on Pokerstars for around $35k. Vanessa Selbst is probably known best for her third place finish in the $5k Heads-up Championship at the 2007 WSOP.
The "Battleship Poker" event is a heads-up championship where the players play against each other on opposing laptops which are back-to-back. The two players play a heads-up SNG against each other, and the winner moves on. Woolf won six straight heads-up matches to take down first prize in the $2k buy-in event. Sorel "zangbezan24" Mizzi and Terrance "Asiandude77" Eischens both won $12.8k for finishing in the 3-4 spot. Mizzi won the event last year.
We have now played down to the final table in the 2008 PCA, and David "The Dragon" Pham is still your chipleader. He was chipleader after Day 3, had his stack whittled down throughout Day 4, and then came back with a vengeance. Is there any doubting just how good he is? Pham enters the final day of play with a massive 7.4 million chip stack. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier is currently in second place with 3.06 million, and will be looking to improve on his second place finish at the EPT Copenhagen event last year.
Other notable names still alive in the event are Joe "bigegypt" Elpayaa and Cristian "charder" Harder. "Bigegypt" is third in chips and "charder" is the small stack heading into the final day of play. All players are guaranteed at least $150k, with first place receiving $2 million dollars.
We'll have a full recap of the final table once the event concludes on Thursday.
