14th Anniversary of Sunday Million To Feature $12.5 Million Guarantee

On Sunday, March 22nd, Pokerstars will be hosting their biggest ever online tournament in terms of total guaranteed prize money.

In order to celebrate the 14th anniversary of the Sunday Million, Pokerstars will be hosting a Sunday Million on March 22nd that will have a total guaranteed prize pool of $12.5 million.

That will be the largest ever guarantee in the history of the site. The $12.5 million guarantee is still far off of the largest guarantee in the history of online poker, as that record belongs to Partypoker, who successfully hosted a $20 million guaranteed tournament in 2019 (that tournament actually ended up with $21 million in total prize money).

Pokerstars is guaranteeing that the winner of the $12.5 million guaranteed Sunday Million will become a millionaire.

The buy-in for this event will be $215, and there will be satellites to the tournament with buy-ins of less than $1.

The very first Sunday Million was held on March 6th, 2006.

This tournament ended up attracting a total of 5,893 players, which ended up creating a total prize pool of a little less than $1.2 million. The first "Sunday Million" was won by "aaaaaa", a pro from the United States.

At the time, Pokerstars wasn't the number one online poker room in the world - that title belonged to partypoker. It seems almost impossible to imagine a world where Pokerstars wasn't the largest online poker room, given their dominance over the industry today.

A few months after the first Sunday Million, UIGEA would be signed into law in the United States, forcing companies like partypoker to pull out of the US market. This made Pokerstars the largest online poker room in the world overnight, as they elected to remain in the United States (which would eventually lead to "Black Friday").

Over the years, the Sunday Million has continued to be the most popular weekly online poker tournament, though partypoker has been trying to take some of the shine away by launching their own weekly tournament with a million dollars guaranteed.
