Ivey Plays in HKD $250,000 Short Deck - Ante Only Event
Published on May 12th, 2018 11:06 pm ESTThe Triton Super High Roller Series in Montenegro got a shot of star power on Saturday after Phil Ivey showed up to play in a preliminary event.
The Series, which is taking place at the Maestral Resort and Casino in Budva, Montenegro, features a total of four events. The first event, the HKD $250,000 Short Deck - Ante Only tournament, featured an appearance by Phil Ivey.
In Short Deck NLHE, the low cards (Deuces to Fives) are removed from the deck, meaning that there are only 36 cards in play. This creates some tremendous action, so it shouldn't be a surprise to see an action junkie like Ivey make an appearance in the event.
Ivey makes infrequent appearances on the tournament circuit and hasn't been heard much from as of late, aside from his legal tussles with the Borgata and Crockfords.
With the World Series of Poker quickly approaching, however, Ivey likely wants to sharpen up his game before making the trip to Las Vegas. Whether he is sitting in the biggest cash games or chasing after bracelet bets, I would expect Ivey to play in Vegas this summer.

There are currently nine players left in the Short Deck event, and Ivey is one of them.
All nine players are guaranteed at least some money, with the eventual winner walking away with $4,749,200 HKD, and the runner-up taking home $3,199,000 HKD. All nine of the remaining players are guaranteed at least $473,000 HKD for making it through to the final day of play.
Here are the chip counts heading into the final day of play:
Alan Sass, 2,775,000
Daniel Cates, 2,670,000
Gabe Patgorski, 2,575,000
Jason Koon, 2,495,000
