Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, a fixture at the tables on Pokerstars, has become the first player to reach Supernova Elite status.
How does a person reach Supernova Elite status? By earning 1,000,000 VPP's over the course of the calendar year (January 1st - December 31st.) By reaching 1,000,000 VPP's, ElkY has guaranteed that he will remain at Supernova Elite status through at least the end of January 2008, and will be extended on a month by month basis through to the end of June 2008, provided that he earned 50,000 VPP's per month. Knowing Elky and his twelve-tabling ways, this should be no problem.
People may have been watching ElkY over the last few months and wondering why he was playing so many heads-up SNG's and getting killed in the process. SNG's are the best way to accumulate VPP's, and now that he is at Supernova Elite status, I think that Elky will focus more on cash games and tournaments, and lower level SNG's.
So how does Elky benefit from now being Supernova Elite?
For starters, Elky will earn a 400% bonus on all FPP's while he maintains Supernova Elite status. This works out to a huge amount of rakeback for ElkY, as he can use these to buy into online and live tournaments. If ElkY plays as much as he normally does, this will work out to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to him.
In addition, ElkY will receive free entry to the WCOOP (worth $2600) and free entry to two of these three tournaments:
-WSOP main Event
-EPT Monte Carlo
-Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure
In addition, ElkY made a number of sidebets with other players as to who would get to SuperNova Elite status first. So in addition to the massive amount of rakeback, Elky will receive about $27,000 in tournament packages and a bunch of money won in sidebets. The money ElkY lost playing Heads Up SNG's during his run to SuperNova Elite status will easily be made up. Congratulations to Elky.
